20:01
directly at Barlow, she
20:03
told her how she was
20:05
a thoroughly callous individual, telling
20:07
her you've obviously presented yourself to those
20:09
who knew you as a charming and
20:11
engaging woman. You
20:14
are clearly a woman of significant
20:16
intellectual abilities, but you also
20:18
have an extraordinary talent for dishonesty. You
20:21
mercilessly abuse the trust of your nearest and dearest
20:24
in their darkest hours. You
20:26
set about targeting other vulnerable people of
20:28
your acquaintance and who trusted you to
20:31
satisfy your need for a relatively lavish
20:33
lifestyle. She told her
20:35
that the worst thing she did was how she told
20:37
her husband Paul and their two children
20:39
she'd cancel and she was dying. She
20:43
also spoke of how she treated her mum. In
20:46
my view, this particular deception had
20:48
two main aims. The
20:51
first was to emotionally blackmail your mother so
20:53
you could avoid any scrutiny by her of
20:55
your dishonesty. The
20:57
second was to isolate your mother from family
21:00
from the world. When
21:02
we went into lockdown, she could not go shopping
21:04
because she was terrified that she
21:06
could bring Covid to her terminally ill daughter.
21:09
It was just the most callous and
21:11
calculated act. Barlow
21:14
is in floods of tears as she was taken down to
21:16
the cells. As she was in
21:18
the police van on the way to spend her first night in
21:20
prison, the police revealed mug
21:22
shots of her pretending to have lost
21:25
her hair through chemotherapy when first arrested
21:27
in September 2020, then with
21:29
fantastically flawless flowing locks after
21:32
the truth came out. Just
21:35
shocking, shocking pictures. Outside
21:37
the court, Detective Sergeant Alan Meehan said,
21:40
Forliz, a horrendous crime and Barlow's actions
21:43
were appalling. She made a
21:45
conscious and deliberate decision to do what she did. There
21:48
were points at which she could have put a stop to it all,
21:50
but she carried on, and now she is
21:52
paying the price for her actions. Sadly,
21:55
so many people have been affected by what
21:57
she did, lives have been changed forever, and
21:59
some were not. never be the same again. Not
22:02
only did Barlow offer holidays she couldn't deliver,
22:05
but she also took advantage of the generosity
22:08
and understanding of those around her which
22:10
has resulted in such far-reaching consequences.
22:13
She wanted a quality of life she couldn't
22:16
afford which resulted in her defrauding
22:18
her family, friends and
22:20
even complete strangers. It
22:23
was later revealed that Barlow's husband and children
22:25
have now moved home away from the area. So
22:29
what do you make of what we've heard today? We've
22:32
heard of people faking illness a number of
22:34
times on this podcast and scamming family and
22:36
friends. But to tell
22:38
your husband and two young children you're dying of
22:40
cancer and then to steal over 500,000
22:42
from your mum when
22:45
her husband has just unexpectedly died, well
22:48
it's pretty hard to believe that anyone could stoop this
22:50
low isn't it? You
22:52
do wonder what someone as cold and callous as
22:54
this may have done in their earlier life. Surely
22:57
not much is off the table if
22:59
you're able to lie so easily without
23:02
caring one jot about those who
23:04
are the very closest to you. I
23:07
can't imagine how I'd have felt each time the text
23:09
or call came through asking me about
23:11
details of what had gone wrong can you? It's
23:14
bad enough facing reviews after a free
23:16
podcast every week but
23:20
when people have paid you all that hard earned
23:22
money to make their holiday dreams come true and
23:24
then letting them down, wow. There
23:27
was one devastating account from February 2020 when a young
23:30
couple had
23:32
been told that their middle son who'd
23:34
been born with a life-limiting disability had only
23:36
months to live. They
23:38
booked a week's holiday feeling it may be the last
23:40
time they could go away as a family of five.
23:43
Their mum Shelly was quoted as saying, he'd
23:46
just come out of intensive care where we'd already
23:48
nearly lost him. We'd been
23:50
told he didn't have long so we decided we
23:52
wanted to make some memories for him and our
23:55
other children. That's when I picked up the phone.
23:57
We were just devastated and
23:59
what? wanted to make his last week's the happiest
24:01
week could, she said. Centre
24:04
Parks was an obvious choice as it involved
24:06
no complex travel and had
24:08
specially adapted lodges for those with
24:10
particular needs. I
24:12
asked Lyn if she could take on the arrangements for
24:15
a week's holidays my head was spinning. She
24:17
called back and said she'd managed to get us an
24:19
incredible deal. Instead of
24:21
£2,500 for one week, she'd
24:24
get us a fortnight for 3,000. I
24:27
was a bit sceptical but she was
24:29
incredibly empathetic and convinced me it
24:31
was the right thing to do. Obviously
24:33
she played in my vulnerability and
24:36
I didn't question her credibility because of
24:38
my friends recommendation. Shelly
24:40
paid all the money but when a
24:43
few days later she hadn't received confirmation she
24:45
chased. Barlow
24:47
replied saying, My mistake, I'll
24:49
get it to you straight away. Then
24:52
another week went by so I messaged her
24:54
again, Shelly recalls. She received
24:56
just an amateur document back. It
24:59
didn't have any of her company details on it, no
25:02
registered address, anyone could have typed
25:04
it. I emailed back saying
25:06
I didn't mean to be rude but
25:08
it didn't look like an official booking. Then
25:11
when I asked for further confirmation she
25:14
stopped replying to any of my messages said Shelly.
25:17
I contacted my friend and asked if all was okay
25:19
with her upcoming trip to Florida and
25:22
I then learnt that Lynn wasn't returning her calls
25:24
either. Then a few days
25:26
later she called me and told me
25:28
Lynn had been arrested for fraud. Shelly
25:31
burst into tears as she said, It
25:34
wasn't the holiday but the fact
25:36
that she knew my world had fallen apart and
25:39
she still felt able to do this to me. The
25:42
children had their bags packed and
25:44
I had to explain they couldn't go, they
25:47
were devastated. How
25:49
can anyone do that to someone suffering? I
25:52
guess she'd have plenty of time to think about it in her
25:54
cell. And does she
25:56
still have a relationship for mum, her husband or
25:58
her children? And what
26:01
will become of her when she's released? It's
26:03
hard to see how any of these relationships can
26:05
be repaired, isn't it? Thank
