Josh Baker is a documentary filmmaker and a journalist. His work focuses on humanitarian issues from some of the world’s most dangerous conflicts. Baker's 2017 film, "The Battle for Mosul," told the story of the people trapped in Mosul as special forces fought to retake it from ISIS. During filming he was hit by a suicide bomb and a building collapsed on top of him, fracturing his spine and riddling his body with shrapnel. Once healed, he returned to work in Iraq and Syria.More recently, Baker wrote and hosted the podcast "I'm Not A Monster" for BBC Sounds. In addition to film-making, Baker trains journalists in safety and consults on risk planning. He also advocates for the rights of freelance journalists with the charity Frontline Freelance Register.Baker began his journalism career reporting for The Times, where he started as a desk researcher and moved up to Foreign News Night editor.Baker received his B.A. in Contemporary Media Practice from the University of Westminster, where he was also head of the film society.
