"Looking for a Fleabag fix in a post-Fleabag world?" .. find solace in the similarly audacious Asking for It, filmmaker Drew Denny’s raunchy, darkly funny seven-episode narrative podcast about queer domestic violence.- Harper's BazaarDrew Denny is passionate about telling groundbreaking stories with a focus on women and LGBTQ communities.Drew Denny’s first narrative feature film, a road trip traumedy called The Most Fun I’ve Ever Had With My Pants On, won Best Feature, Best First Feature and Best Cinematography in its festival run, earning her a spot in The Advocate’s “40 Under 40” list, where she was named “an auteur to watch.”She went on to direct six documentary episodes for the launch of Vice’s “Broadly” in 2015– covering the disappearance of lesbian spaces, the closing of abortion care facilities in Texas and feminist activists who use drones to deliver abortion pills to women in Poland. Her other documentary work includes an interview with Hillary Clinton in 2016, a documentary for CNN following the NASA scientists who survey Earth’s polar ice caps, and QUEER HABITS – a short film following a troupe of drag queen nuns who save a rural homophobic community from ruin. QUEER HABITS is now being adapted for narrative television by Marta Kaufman’s shingle OK Goodnight.Drew’s most recent film MOMSTER, a queer heist film starring Brianna Hildebrand and Amanda Plummer, premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival 2019.Denny's first podcast, ASKING FOR IT, produced by Kaitlin Prest of Mermaid Palace and distributed by CBC Podcasts, was called "dark and hooky" by the New Yorker and compared to Fleabag by Harper's Bazaar. The series explores queer intimate partner abuse in an immersive, hyper-realistic narrative that never fails to find the humor in the darkness. Asking For It features performances by Denny, Prest, actors Kimmy Robertson of TWIN PEAKS and Mel Shimkovitz of HIGH MAINTENANCE as well as an original soundtrack written and recorded by Drew and her bandmate Christina Gaillard who perform in the series and in real life as HIPS. Drew takes pride in directing projects that are entertaining, cathartic, and that authentically represent stories and characters who have never before been seen. She is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts Production Program and California Institute of the Arts Aesthetics and Politics Masters Program and is the creative director of the 501c3 organization Allies in Arts, which provides support for artists in all mediums who identify as women, people of color, LGBTQ+ and/or differently abled.
